Western Governors University Top Producer of Nurses In US
The Western Governors University has been recognized as one of the top producers of nurses to people of color in the United States, this is according to Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.
The report has identified the top 100 health science degree producers in the U.S. for African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American and Native American students.
"We are fortunate to live in Washington state, a national leader in healthcare research and delivery. We have achieved that high standard in part because of a diverse workforce of highly skilled and knowledgeable nurses," said Jean Floten, Chancellor of WGU Washington in a press release.
Since its foundation, WGU through College of Health Professions has awarded nearly 10,000 degrees in nursing. Today, WGU has more than 11,000 enrolled students across all 50 states, 23% of whom are people of color.
In addition to this, WGU Washington has also awared nearly 700 bachelor's and master's degrees to working health professionals in this state. It also has thousands of students who are currently enrolled in the university's nursing college.
"WGU Washington helps deliver high-quality education to health professionals across the state, including those who have traditionally been underserved," Floten added.
The WGU Washington's BSN and MSN degree programs were created and developed to help working adults to advance their careers in an educational setting despite their busy schedules. The university gives students the chance to study and complete assessments on their own schedules.
According to WGU, the competency-based learning that their programs provide, allows students to advance as long as they were able to show mastery of the material. The university said that since they measure the learning of its students in this way rather than looking at how long they'd been in the course, professionals who already have the knowledge and skills based on their experience are given the chance to move more quickly which saves both their time and money.
